Information on ports in Bahraina

Bahrain destination for sea transport

An important port in Bahrain is the Mina Salman Port, named after the king's grandfather, Shaikh Salman Bin Hamad Al-Khalif. Mina Salman Port is the most important port in Bahrain for general cargo and container traffic. The port can handle dry cargo, conventional general cargo and containers with an average annual volume of 2.5 million tonnes. The port was opened in 1962 and since then it has been continuously modernised and improved in terms of efficiency and capacity by the Government of Bahrain. The port has 15 berths, two of which are container terminals, the rest being available for conventional cargo vessels of various sizes, with draughts of between 5.5 and 10 metres. There is also a roll-on/roll-off ramp for vessels up to 15 metres wide.

Volume of containerised cargo in Bahrain's ports

More than 75 per cent of the cargo in Mina Salman Cargo is containerised cargo, with a volume of more than 1.5 million tonnes per year. The Mina Salman port is also open around the clock. The containers are handled at a terminal on a quay length of 600 metres, a large part of which comes in feeder ships on behalf of deep-sea container ships. Four 30-40-tonne gantry cranes are available at two berths, which make it possible to handle the handling of two 300-metre ships with a draught of up to 10.5 metres at the same time.

Artificial port in Bahrain for container handling

In the town of Al Hidd on the east coast of Bahrain, an artificial harbour called "Khalifa bin Salman Port in Hidd", or "Hidd Port" for short, was built far out to sea. This then began operation in March 2009. Container handling in particular is of the greatest importance with an average annual capacity of around 1.1 million TEUs. The 90 hectare area of land has a quay length of five kilometres. There are also 45 hectares of state-of-the-art logistics zone available. This makes the Hidd Port in Bahrain one of the most efficient cargo terminals on the Persian Gulf.
