Port of North Korea

The port of Nampo is located at the mouth of the Taedong River on the west coast of North Korea, some 55 kilometres south-west of the capital Pyongyang. This port is the main port of North Korea. Besides the commercial use of the port of Nampo, the fishing industry also profits from it. This is the most important source of income for the port city.

Major industries in Nampo

There are also important industries in Nampo. Products from shipbuilding, steel and vehicle production are exported via this port. In addition, a joint venture between North and South Korea produces clothing for export in Nampo and processes it in the port there.
The port of Nampo is connected to Pyongyang by an eight-lane motorway and is also an important traffic junction. Since the opening for export, the economy in North Korea has also developed further. At the port of Nampo an 8 km long dike with three lock chambers has been built, which allows ships of up to 50,000 DWT to pass through.

Port, on the other hand, can accommodate ships of up to 20,000 DWT

The port can accommodate ships up to 20,000 DWT, but is frozen in winter. Port Nampo offers anchorages from 11 to 12.2 metres deep. The loading pier has a depth of 7.1 to 9.1 metres while the oil terminal has a depth of three metres.
