Information on ports in Ghana

Ghana destination for sea transport

In Ghana there are two deep-water ports which are crucial for the country's economic performance. The port of Takoradi, which was developed in the 1920s, and the port of Tema near Accra, completed in 1961, are connected by rail to Kumasi, Ghana's second largest city. In 1990, these main Ports in Ghana were rehabilitated at a cost of about US$ 100 million.

Harbours in Ghana repeatedly expanded

As early as 1996, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority decided on a further expansion programme for the two ports. This project, combined with investment costs of 365 million US dollars, will provide better port access to the port in Takoradi and Tema. Project work started in 1998 and some 6.7 million tonnes of goods were shipped through Ghana's two main ports in 1996. Although the Volta Reservoir was created in the 1960s to create a water area 400 km inland from the Akosombo Dam, which offers good opportunities for domestic small-scale transport, goods traffic on the Volta and the Volta Reservoir is of extremely limited importance. The port operation is carried out by the holding company Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority. An important shipping company is Alpha West Africa Line Ltd, which clearly focuses on the transport of goods and merchandise to the USA, Asia, Northern Europe and West Africa. Another important company is Black Star Line Ltd, which was privatised at the end of 2004. Its main area of operation is passenger and freight shipping to Canada, the USA, Great Britain, the Mediterranean states and to West Africa.
