Port of Kuwait
The most important port in Kuwait is the port of Shuwaikh, also called Ash-Ashuwaykh. It is located west of Kuwait City, on the southern shore of the Bay of Kuwait on the Persian Gulf.
Area around the port of Shuwaikh is industrial
The area around Shuwaikh harbour is both industrial and rural. The port of Shuwaikh is managed and operated by the Kuwait-Ports Authority. The most important port of Kuwait covers an area of 320 hectares, the water area of the port is 120 hectares. The port of Shuwaikh has 21 berths with a total length of 4055 metres. Of these, 14 of the berths have a depth of 10 metres, another four 8.5 metres and the remaining three berths are 6.7 metres deep. Another important port in Kuwait is the port of Shuaiba. It is located on the north-eastern coast of the Persian Gulf, about 45 kilometres south-east of Kuwait City. It is also home to an oil refinery, a petrochemical plant and a seafood packaging plant. Shuaiba is also home to one of the largest seawater desalination plants in the world.
Second largest port imports a lot in the industrial sector
The second largest port of Kuwait imports raw materials as well as equipment and machinery for the industrial sector. Petrochemical, oil and petroleum products are exported there as well as in Shuwaikh. Four of the 20 berths are used for container handling.
