General cargo transport

General cargo in transport does not require special containers. For this reason, general cargo is often transported on closed trucks, in the holds of aircraft, on flatbed trucks or in containers. However, special rules and regulations apply to load securing. As a rule, general cargo in transport is a consignment between sender and recipient in door-to-door traffic.

The number of packages is recorded on the consignment note

Several individual parts of a delivery are combined into so-called packages for better transport. The number of packages is noted on the consignment note. When loading, only this number, and not the contents of the packages, must be checked, as the carrier is normally liable for lost goods. The number of packages is noted on the delivery note to check that the delivery is complete, so that it can be ensured immediately after unloading that no package has remained on the truck.

Groupage shipments can be planned perfectly

The transport of general cargo as consolidated cargo is now widespread. For this purpose the forwarder has to plan the routes in advance by making optimum use of the loading space capacity and by taking into account time and traffic criteria as well as delivery priorities accordingly. The general cargo that is to reach the recipient first must therefore be loaded into the vehicle last. Nowadays, transport of general cargo is usually possible within 24 hours, including even destinations abroad that are up to 500 kilometres away.
