Information on general cargo forwarding

The transport of general cargo usually takes place without special containers. Therefore, general cargo is often transported in the holds of aeroplanes, in containers, on flatbed trucks or on closed trucks of a general cargo forwarding company. However, guidelines and regulations for load securing apply. Normally, a general cargo forwarder transports a consignment in so-called door-to-door traffic between sender and recipient.

General cargo can be combined

For better transport, several individual parts of a delivery are combined into packages. The number of packages is recorded on the consignment note of the universal freight forwarder. Only this number is to be checked during loading. The content of the packages is irrelevant for the general cargo forwarder, however, as he is usually liable for lost goods. The number of packages is noted on the delivery note for completeness checks. This makes it possible to make sure that no packages have been left on the truck of the forwarder immediately after unloading.

Simple planning of groupage shipments

In the meantime, general cargo transport as collective consignment has become widespread. The general cargo forwarder must therefore plan the routes in advance, taking care to make optimum use of the loading space capacity, as well as to take into account traffic and time criteria and delivery priorities. It is therefore logical for a general cargo forwarder to load the general cargo that should reach the recipient first into the vehicle last. Nowadays, a transportation by a general cargo company can be completed within 24 hours, and it is even possible to deliver to destinations abroad, which are up to 500 kilometres away.
