Container dimensions

In the As a rule, containers have standardised dimensions, which makes their international transport much easier. Even the dimensions of transport vehicles, such as trucks or ships, are adapted to the dimensions of containers. The same applies to the dimensions of cranes or warehouses, which considerably facilitates the use of space during storage and handling. The most common containers are the so-called ISO containers, which are standardised 8 feet wide and either 20 feet or 40 feet long. This is why the abbreviation "TEU" is derived from "Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit", which is used as a loading unit.

Internationally adapted dimensions

There are numerous special sizes among the ISO containers. Among other things, heights are common which can be driven without restriction during road transport. On the American market, 45 foot containers are becoming more and more popular. This corresponds to a length of 13.72 metres. These can also be transported in Europe on truck chassis without exceeding the maximum total length of the articulated lorry.

Some containers and dimensions are used very frequently. In addition to the 20 and 40 foot containers, these include the somewhat larger 40 foot high cube and 45 foot high cube. The dimensions of the containers for air freight, on the other hand, are subject to different rules and standardised according to ICAO standards.
